WebThe Prefab estate was built after the war by Walthamstow Borough Council on agreement with the landowners on the hillside overlooking the lake at Highams Park and consisted of 176 Prefabricated homes. Many east end families had lost their homes during bombing raids and housing was in short supply. WebThe River Ching originally flowed where the north bank of Highams Park Lake is (The Highams Park or lake field side). The reason as to why the Ching was diverted and now runs alongside the west bank of the lake goes back to the late 1800s. One summer, the Ching became highly polluted with sewage from houses up-stream in Buckhurst Hill.
